About Cynthia Townsend
Cynthia is the founder and Director of Ideas, Knowledge & Strategies LLC, a business support and education consulting company that helps organizations strengthen their impact through strategic planning, professional development, and culturally responsive practices.
Her career spans decades of leadership in the afterschool space, where she has served as an administrator, educator, and advocate for youth development. Cynthia holds a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and is deeply committed to equipping youth with the tools she wishes she had access to growing up.
“As a youth with a challenging home life, I wish I understood and had the tools that SEL strategies can provide,” Cynthia shares. “Introducing youth to ways to learn about themselves—with the goal of building both themselves and their relationships—is invaluable.”
Cynthia’s Vision for Family-Centered SEL
Cynthia believes that Social-Emotional Learning must be rooted in community and family engagement. Her approach emphasizes the importance of building strong relationships with families to better support the youth we serve.
“Our organizations are part of ‘the village’ that surrounds youth and their families,” she says. “It is essential to build strong relationships with families to greater impact the youth we serve. Family-centered SEL is a no-brainer.”
Cynthia also advocates for culturally sensitive SEL, recognizing that every culture has its strengths and challenges. She believes that honest engagement with these dynamics can lead to more positive outcomes and stronger communities.
“SEL is important because when individuals are strengthened, communities are strengthened. If you strengthen the family, you strengthen the individual—and the community.”
