Announcing Bright Promises' Next SEL Expert in Residence - Marcy L. Peake

At Bright Promises Foundation, we believe that Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a powerful tool that can help individuals, families, and communities thrive. That's why we're proud to present the Bright Communities SEL Resource Hub, an online space designed to provide accessible and diverse SEL resources for families, caregivers, educators, and community organizations across Illinois.

What is the Bright Communities SEL Resource Hub?

The Bright Communities SEL Resource Hub is a collaboration between Bright Promises Foundation and its network of community partners focused on enhancing social and emotional well-being for children, youth, and their families.

This hub is a one-stop destination for a range of SEL resources, ranging from videos and articles to curricula, audio files, and more—available in both English and Spanish. These materials support SEL development and practice for individuals of all ages: children, youth, and adults.

Whether you're looking for educational tools for the classroom, activities for your family, or resources for community organizations, the Bright Communities SEL Resource Hub strengthens SEL development, nurtures positive relationships, and creates a sense of joy and connection.

SEL Expert in Residence: Marcy L. Peake

In partnership with Illinois Afterschool Network, we are excited to welcome our next SEL Expert in Residence -- Marcy L. Peake.

Marcy is the founder of The Center for Cultural Agility, author of the book Please Understand, curriculum and articles, State of Michigan Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, Certified Family Life Educator, and Great Start to Quality Trainer.

Marcy approaches her work as a pracademic from her multi-racial, multi-ethnic, and multi-cultural identities, research, service, and scholarship.

She is a national consultant and practitioner in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion, pre-K-12 and higher education, family sciences, youth development, and family and community engagement. She is a former Family Science faculty member who taught graduate and undergraduate students pursuing degrees in education, youth development, counseling, and student affairs in higher education, and served as the Director of Diversity and Community Outreach Initiatives in the College of Education and Human Development at Western Michigan University.

"Everyone teaches and everyone learns" is Marcy's guiding philosophy when engaging families because it honors the individual contributions of each family member while centering collaboration for individual and familial skill building.

Family centered SEL approaches provide families with strategies they can contextualize to align with their individual and collective familial values, cultures, and ways of engaging to enhance and maintain wellbeing.

Marcy believes SEL is important because it is foundational to preparing instead of repairing at the individual, family, and community levels while providing a consistent framework for navigating changes that occur throughout the lifespan. Life is continually changing, so it is beneficial to have skills that provide stability, honor personal and social identities, and anchors individuals to their personal agency during the changes.
